The NEBRASKAland Foundation is a nonprofit organization, with the Governor serving as honorary chairperson, dedicated to enhancing the pride Nebraskans share in the Good Life and showcasing our state’s exceptional quality of life to visitors. Since its founding in 1962 under the leadership of Governor Frank Morrison, the Foundation has remained steadfast in its mission to promote, celebrate, and elevate Nebraska’s social, historical, cultural, educational, and economic heritage.

The annual Statehood Day Dinner—held in the majestic Capitol Rotunda and Great Hall—is the signature event of the Foundation. This gala evening commemorates Nebraska’s admission to the Union on March 1, 1867, and brings together more than 400 honored guests. Each year, the Foundation recognizes Distinguished NEBRASKAlanders whose service, leadership, and achievements have brought honor to our state and inspired others to follow their example.

The Foundation proudly sponsors youth programs that encourage students to explore Nebraska-focused topics through art, brick art, computer graphics, essays, impromptu speaking, poetry, and social studies. These entries are judged at the Nebraska State Fair, where young Nebraskans showcase their creativity, knowledge, and pride in their home state. The Foundation also supports the annual State Contest of National History Day, held each April at Nebraska Wesleyan University, further encouraging students to engage deeply with history and scholarship.

In addition, the Foundation presents the Rising Star Award, a distinctive honor recognizing outstanding tourism attractions and significant expansions that strengthen Nebraska’s tourism landscape. Recent recipients include the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, the North Fork River Front in Norfolk, Omaha’s RiverFront, the Mignery Sculpture Garden in Bartlett, and The National Willa Cather Center in Red Cloud.
